I always love creative marketing and I LOVE the mobile space… so you have to say, the recent effort by Microsoft to hold a mock funeral for iPhone and Blackberry as a way of launching Windows Mobile 7 was pretty funny…
Of course the MS employees doing a rendition of Thriller and hearses will poll-bearers carrying effigies of the other phones may have been a little over the top, but it least it shows that the nerd-crew up in Redmond have some sense of humour.
You be the judge…
Interestingly, they didn’t include the Android - Google’s mobile phone operating system that is taking the world by storm. With over 200,000 app on Apple’s App Store and over 1 billion downloads a year, MS will have to spend every cent of the reported $1b plus budget to gain market share… and even then Gartner doesn’t give them much show…
More details available on Neowin…
From a marketing perspective, I’d ask ”who was the market for this?” - You’d probably have to say “the nerdy - early technology adopters” and I’m always curious about humour in marketing… it might capture a bit of attention (which is good) but does it generate interest, desire and - importantly - action?
